Nursery Schools - There are introductory workshops to the Gallery's Contemporary Art section. They vary according to the children's age. Children in the 3-4-year-old age group are invited to attend a workshop comprising of a tour around the gallery during which they are accompanied by a story. Children in the 4-5-year-old age group work with shapes and colours while 5-6-year-olds have a workshop on creating portraits of others and of themselves. These workshops follow the school calendar and have existed since 2001. They are free of charge but must be booked in advance. Primary Schools - The Jesi Civic Art Gallery has already been organizing workshops for the third, fourth and final classes of primary schools for the last twelve years., It was probably one of the first regional museums to try out this kind of learning experiment. The aim is to educate and help children to acquire a basic sensitivity towards art and a fondness of what is beautiful by observing and analysing works of art - especially those belonging to the gallery's Antique Art Collection. Specific teaching methods are used which combine aspects of playing with those of learning. The course is organized by Dr Gloriano Paoletti and consists of three meetings held on three separate dates. Pupils are given folders containing all the materials necessary for completing the activities.
The first meeting begins with an observation game based on certain details belonging to work of art contained in various parts of the gallery. The visit continues with the gradual discovery of the symbols present in the paintings and the subsequent understanding of their hidden meanings.
During the second meeting, the activity of observing takes place along the Hall of the Stuccoes which is a real universe of symbols and meanings. It represents a journey through the life of Man with his rythms, seasons and his practical and theoretical activities. The next stage is that of "breaking.down" the work of art so as to detect the fundamental elements of which it is composed - the drawing, the colours and the different effects of light, dark and shadow that the light creates within the painting.
The third meeting entails telling a story - the one painted on the Santa Lucia altar-piece, a story created out of the framework of time, space and from all the historic characters who bring life to the painting itself.
Needless, to say, all these activities take place in a friendly atmosphere using appropriate language which is easily understood by the children. They are also continuously encouraged to take an active part in the proceedings due to the possibility of winning small prizes for their contributions (post cards, guidebooks, small brochures, etc.) or by team games organized in the various sections of the gallery. Every child has a final present to take home as a souvenir of his visit - a coloured cap bearing the gallery's name. These activities are free of charge but must be booked.
